snurched from a snippet of an article originally posted at SF2K, and brought over to the scifi board.

The channel, once deemed to be the most savvy in drawing viewers away from the major networks, has sacrificed all but one of its popular original series and emptied its wallet on the purchase of an eight year contract for the entire nine seasons of The X-Files.

that's what this crap was all about? they ditched all their original series but Farscape so they could buy reruns? somebody's seriously smokin crack over there.

Good lord. How strange. But you know reruns of x-files will get them higher ratings than most of their original programming would have.

maybe, but will it keep viewers in the long term, cuz that basically turns SciFi back into the re-run channel

Well it's pretty extreme, but they may think that overall if a lot of new viewers start out watching x-files they'll see promos for shows like Farscape and Stargate and then tune in for those shows. It's a carneval barker kind of tactic, get the people in for the big show and then get them to stick around for the other acts.

which would be a cool tactic if they, uhm, had some more other acts. :lol i hope they're not planning on bring "Jeremiah" over *shiver*

Well they've got Farscape and Stargate and at least a couple more new series planned and if fox can stop frelling with Firefly, they'll get encore runs of that.
